Background

The Department of Animal Science is one of academic units opened in 2012/13 GC under the Department of Agriculture, College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture, Selale Campus, Addis Ababa University, and has been receiving and teaching students under the regular program for four consecutive years, namely in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. However, due to the demand of the local community and the government's good will to expand universities, the Addis Ababa University College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture, Selale Campus, was upgraded to an independent university on July 8, 2016, and its name was Salale University. The organization of the university was also restructured. The academic unit, which was called the Animal Science Unit, was renamed the Animal Science Department.

The Department of Animal Science, in order to achieve the goals of the country's higher education institutions, especially the goals of Selale University and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, began its teaching and learning work in October 2016 by accepting 36 (thirty-six) first-year students and 61 (sixty-one) existing 2nd and 3rd-year students from the Addis Ababa University College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture, Selale Campus, under the name of the university. Since established under Salale University, the department graduated its fifth round students in 2024.
