Background

The task of establishing College of Engineering and Technology in Salale University has been taken in place since, 2014 E.C. Mr. Tesfaye Reta, Mr. Habtamu Adino and Mr. Yared Berhanu are among the founding members of the college of Engineering and Technology, whom have engaged in conducting need assessment to identify programs. After 1 year of need assessment task, B.Sc. in Civil Engineering program started in 2015 E.C. with 21 students for the first time.

Civil Engineering is concerned with the study of conception, design, construction and maintenance of large public and private projects. Civil Engineers build and maintain bridges, highways, railways, tunnels, airports, dams, water treatment and distribution systems and large buildings, along with many other structures. Environmental considerations, such as water supply, pollution control and preservation of soil quality, are also a part of the course of study. With thorough knowledge of both the principles of construction and the possible environmental consequences of a structure, the civil engineer's expertise is one that is essential to our present civilization and one that will become ever more valuable in the future. Access to drinking water, shelter from the weather, roads and harbors, railways and airports, hospitals, sports stadiums and schools are infrastructures that supports our daily life. As infrastructure developments are indicators of improved livelihood and ways of investment attractions and tourism, contribution of Civil Engineering in this regard is very crucial.

Objectives

Civil Engineering program is aimed at training manpower required for the realization of the country’s untouched Civil Engineering works through adopting the benefits of digital Engineering. Well-qualified Civil Engineers with adequate knowledge in the area of Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transport, Water Resources and who can be actively engaged in the planning, design, development and management of Civil Engineering projects will be produced through this program. Specifically, the trainees will be equipped with the knowledge and skills that enables them to execute the following tasks:

  • Undertake project identification, pre-feasibility and feasibility study and detail design of Civil Engineering works.
  • Prepare complete contract documents and terms of references for Civil Engineering projects.
  • Plan, manage, monitor and evaluate the operation and maintenance of Civil Engineering works.
  • Remodeling and rehabilitation of existing Civil Engineering works.
