Background

The Department of Afan Oromo and Literature is one of the departments introduced under the college of Social Sciences and Humanities at Salale University in 2011 E.C. During its establishment, the department began with 40 students in regular. In the same academic year, 130 Weekend students and 128 teachers in service during the summer program were admitted to the department. In 2012 number of students in regular 23, BA in weekend number of students 62, 2013 number of students BA in regular 40, number of students BA in Weekend 52, MA in weekend 24 and 2014 MA in Weekend 18 in general, the total number of first and second degree candidates enrolled in to the department of Afan Oromo and Literature in 2014 E.C. academic year 517 students.


Vision

  • In line with the vision of Salale University, department of Afan Oromo and Literature aspires to promote excellence in the production, growth and dissemination of advanced scientific knowledge through teaching, research and Community service that primarily focuses on technology transfer. Accordingly, the department devoted to produce well-trained, competent, and knowledgeable professionals in Afan Oromo and Literature who are accountable to the development of the nation.

Mission

  • The mission of the Program in Teaching Afan Oromo and Literature seeks to educate and train students on Oromo linguistic aspects, literatures, cultures and research in the Language. It also prepares scholars/professionals who are capable of study Afan Oromoo and its linguistic features, socio-cultural aspects and folklore-literature and on other social aspects of the society in order to disseminate the knowledge to researchers and others who want to know and study Oromo cultures, language and literature in relation to education.

Objectives

  • The main objective of the establishment of Afan Oromo and Literature department is to train high-level qualified personnel capable of working in different settings: mass media workers, secondary school teachers, and public relation officers for governmental and non-governmental organizations. It also helps learners promote research skills in and/or on Afan Oromo and develop their concepts and knowledge of linguistics, literature, socio-cultural aspects of Oromo language.
