Background

This program is offered in different Universities of our country. One of these is the University of Salale. The Amharic Language and Literature department is launched in Salale University from 2011 E.C by Bachelor degree program then Master’s Program in Applied Linguistics in Teaching Amharic (ALTA) also launched in 2013 E.C. Until this time 103 students by first degree & 15 students by second degree graduated from our department.


Vision

  • To become leading department from Ethiopian Comprehensive University by 2030 in Language, Literature and Folklore field of specialization.

Mission

  • To produce competent and innovative graduates in Language, Literature and Folklore fields of study.
  • To conduct problem-solving research.
  • To provide demand-driven community services

Objectives

  • Train writers and critics, public relation officers, editors and translators;
  • Train researchers in field of language, linguistics, literature, folklore and human concerns;
  • Organize and offer short term training and workshops; Offer short term training on language skills and literature: (1) Report writing, and (2) Literature principles and related issues, (3) Translation. Organize workshops on: (1) Languages study (Linguistics), and (2) Literature (editing, literary criticism etc.).
  • Offer language related services related to: Translation service, Editing service, Preparation and evaluation of language curriculum, Public relation services, Transcription, and Event organizing.
  • Conduct Research on the various languages and literatures of Ethiopia: (1) With reference to the problems of organization and institutions, thereby give consultant service, and (2) to participate at regional and national forums.
  • Facilitate the fertile ground for produce secondary and high school teachers.
  • Recognize culture-specific perspectives and values embedded in language behaviour.
  • Decode, analyze, and interpret authentic texts of different genres.
  • Produce organized coherent discourse in oral and written modes.
