Background

The Department of Journalism and Communication in Salale University is focuses on educating students in the field of media creation, dissemination of information, and critical analysis of communication practices, with a strong emphasis on understanding the Ethiopian media landscape, Investigation, ethical considerations, and the evolving digital media environment; the prominent Department in this field is Journalism and Communication (JoCo), started with the BA Journalism and Communication in 2020, which offers various undergraduate courses in journalism and related fields.


Vision

  • To provide quality media education to the students of Journalism and Communication in order to build good human communication in the rapid changing society from traditional to digital. The department emphasis to sharpen content development skills for budding media professional and to be the leading Department in Ethiopia by 2030.

Mission

  • To produce innovative graduates, conducting research and provide community services. The department is devoted to create awareness within the students, media professionals, College and stakeholders about freedom of expression, human rights, value education, cultural awareness in a safe, accessible, and affordable learning environment, media ethics and changing trends in media research. Additionally, the department aims towards promoting creativity, innovation and research in new age media.

Objectives

  • Research, write, edit and create material of entry-level professional quality according to the practices and standards of news organizations, magazines, media and information literacy, online, investigative, forensic and professional communications.
  • Understanding of media law and ethical conduct in journalism and professional writing, and other requirements of good journalistic practice.
  • Awareness of the assumptions about culture and gender implicit in choice of media, representations, and focus in journalism and professional writing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the history and traditions of journalism and professional writing.
